Four months spent in India, produced organic cottons, linens and a fine Peace Silk that is non-violent. Most silk kills the worm in the harvesting of the cocoon. Peace silk allows the worm to live, eat it's way out of the cocoon, and then the fiber is twisted into a fine yarn for weaving a luxurious fabric. This fabric has the "highest frequency" on the planet because there is no negative emotion in the harvesting of the fiber. What better to be married in a dress that is made in a SACRED SILK (tm)!

The gowns have linings that are organic as well, unlike most designer gowns in the industry. This insures the Bride is cool & comfortable as well!

Blue Sky recycles cardboard, plastic, paper, and aluminum; practices energy saving techniques such as: turning off computers and lights when not in use, we use energy-efficient light bulbs, car pool to weddings, we donate to the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, we have a paperless work environment.

How You can be Greener

Recycle Food and Paper from the event. Use paperless invitations or invitations on recycled paper, make donations to green companies in lieu favors, use local vendors or products, use vendors who support green initiatives, or use flowers that are in season. Vegetarian travel is one way to make your honeymoon a trip you will never forget. Green Earth Travel specializes in vegetarian travel. Since the word vegan is unknown to some, we have been collecting information on how to travel as a vegan. We are taking a different approach to travel in the last couple of years. We want to promote humane and volunteer vacations. In other words go and have fun, but also do it humanely. Don't go to zoos or circus-instead visit with an animal sanctuary or better yet volunteer with one of our sanctuary trips.

Destination weddings to an eco-resort are a great way to make your wedding unique!! Or on your honeymoon volunteer at an animal sanctuary and then head out camping!

We practice what we preach. We use LED lights and have signed up for the Clean Currents. We are a vegan/vegetarian household (except for the cat). We use 100% recycled paper and we do recycle paper and plastics.

On Sunday the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center will host the Mid-Atlantic Green Wedding Showcase. We invite you to learn more about this beautiful space and stop by on Sunday to see it in person!

The Riggs Alumni Center is more than a building. It’s a story that continues to be written. It was created based on dreams and memories of thousands of individuals that wanted to not only create a series of conference rooms attached to a banquet hall but also create a venue that was elegant, warm and welcoming; they succeeded.

Many hotels and conference centers can only offer guests a room to hold their wedding, reunion, office party or seminar but at Riggs we offer more than “a space.”

Because of the spirit of family and friendship that first inspired its creation and guided its construction, the Riggs Alumni Center perfectly fills that need to make any event an unforgettable occasion. Whether one is dreaming of a garden party for 10 or planning a tradeshow for 1,000, we can make their event a success. In addition to our professional event staff, travertine marble floors, clerestory windows; we also feature complimentary state-of-the-art audio visual including LCD projectors, plasma-screen TVs, teleconferencing, and high-speed wireless.

Some of our green initiatives include but aren’t limited to encouraging the caterers on our list to implement practices that support our green initiatives. Our staff works diligently to ensure lights are off in offices and meeting spaces when vacant. In addition, the lights in some areas of our event spaces operate on a timer and shut off at a certain time. Some of our more recent efforts include hosting an eco-party where each staff member was issued a coffee mug for their use while in the office. Some of our efforts include decreasing paper usage and utilizing online registration for our alumni association events - we have worked to eliminate paper products as much as possible. When possible, we strongly encourage the use of e-mail and/or electronic delivery for various business transactions. Our recycling efforts include the recycling of cans, bottles, cardboard, paper, and magazines in our office space and we have recycle bins throughout our entire building.

For the bride & groom…

We encourage couples to consider having their wedding and reception at the same venue. Imagine, the ease and convenience of having your guests in one place. Perhaps a small intimate ceremony in our Gardens with the reception a few feet away in our marble hallway that feature ceiling-to-floor length windows for guests to enjoy the scenery.
When choosing vendors, focus on those vendors that practice sustainability. It is much easier to maintain sustainability when those working closely with you on this special day share a common goal.

Tara Lynn: Nothing Artificial

With her genuine, earthy style, Crystal Bowersox sang her way to the number two spot on last season’s American Idol competition. And now, pausing from her singing tour, she has brought that same authentic style to her wedding, wearing an earth-friendly gown made of hemp and cotton that was created by Tara Lynn (www.taralynnbridal.com), a small local business in northern Vermont with a solar powered studio.

“The gown is a simple princess line with an open back; a machine-knit hemp twine strap crisscrosses in back,” says designer, Tara Lynn. “Crystal loves sunflowers, so we put a hemp twine sunflower appliqué in front with French knots in the center of the flower and accented with bits of crystal and glass beads that I’ve collected over the years from yard sales and second hand stores. Crystal also liked a seashell wedding gown on our website, so we created a macramé train of hemp twine with seashells all over it.”

Tara Lynn works by hand and on vintage sewing machines to create one-of-a-kind wedding gowns from natural, organic and repurposed fibers that are shipped throughout the U.S. and around the world. I love vintage everything and most of my clothing and jewelry is based on putting beautiful old pieces together to make wonderful new/old one -of- a -kind dresses, tops, skirts, necklaces and bracelets. I find most of my wonderful treasures at Estate Sales and Antique stores. I have a large collection of vintage linens, doilies and laces to work from. Your dress will be unique, one of a kind and hand sewn using Vintage Lace and Linens along with beautiful vintage buttons or other vintage jewels.

Vintage pieces have their own history. Many have been well loved and some stored away for decades carefully wrapped. I love them all and even the pieces with holes or stains are cut and reclaimed. I like reusing items that some people would just toss away into the thrift bag. I have come across some unusual linens that remind us of a very romantic time when linens were monogramed and even the sheets were ironed.

Some of these treasures most certainly were wedding gifts that rode across the ocean to their new home in America. Grandmas spent many hours embroidering tiny threads into beautiful works of art or tatting lacey finery.

Today we don't use these beautiful pieces as they were intended very often so I love to find ways to use these gorgeous linens so they will be seen and enjoyed not packed away hidden and forgotten.

Repurposed fabrics and materials have always been the most creative resource for my designs. The unique quality of each piece allows me a creative process not possible with new yardage.

Each piece of lace has a unique history, its own story to tell. Some stories divulged to me as someone gives me a treasured piece that's been handed down to them, a family heirloom.

Others, I've gleaned from piles of fabrics destined for landfills after they've run the gamut of thrift stores, yardsales and the like. It's thrilling to find a gem in the rough!

My main inspiration is nature, the beauty and the desire to preserve that beauty. My desire in designing is to show the myriad possibilities of creating beautiful clothes from existing fabrics and materials.

My business has always included the use of recycled materials in every aspect; packing materials, paper, etc. It's of utmost importance to me that my business is as 'green' as it can be!

I love using soft, pliable fabrics that move with the body and feel good against the skin. It's important my creations are comfortable, something to feel at ease in.

Just a Tad Sweet: Honest Tea

Honest Tea and Honest Ade are USDA certified organic and ‘just a tad sweet,’ compared to most of those other sugar-laden beverages on the market.

Honest Tea is a mission-driven business that keeps sustainability and health and wellness top-of-mind. We offer great-tasting beverages that are certified organic, high in antioxidants and low in sugar.

One of the biggest strides Honest Tea made was when they light-weighted their plastic bottle to use 22% less plastic, removing millions of pounds of resin from the market each year.

This year for Earth Month, they plan to work with the National Forest Foundation to create an in-store reusable bag program that will help raise awareness for deforestation and plant over 50,000 trees nationwide.

For big fans of the brand, there’s certainly no limit to the creativity. We’ve had consumers repurpose the glass bottles as vases or make magnets with special bottle cap quotes as a takeaway – think “Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.” --Robert Browning.

Fiberactive Organics: Leaving Things Better

Fiberactive Organics strives to not only to leave a very small footprint on the Earth but also to leave it better for having been there. Fiberactive uses only organic fabrics, laces, ribbons, and even thread they manufacture themselves. We use vintage and reclaimed buttons and embellishments are either vintage or hand made by our designers and artisans.

Fiberactive is also a place for social goodness. All of the seamstresses are Montagnard refugees from the mountains of Vietnam. They teach them everything from how to use a basic pair of scissors on up. In 2008, owner Julie Mullin started the Montagnard Community Garden so the women could produce their own food for their families.

One of Julie's favorite ideas for wedding quilts is to have a piece of specially mounted organic fabric at the wedding. As each guest comes in they sign the fabric with special fabric pen. The piece is sewn into the back of the wedding quilt as a permanent reminder of the special day. On a couple's 50th anniversary, looking at those old autographs will bring back wonderful memories of family and friends.

The garments being shown in this year's Green Wedding Showcase Eco Fashion Show are the debut of our line of 100% organic wedding apparel. In April this collection will be part of another fashion show Fiberactive is producing which will kick off our new charity, The Montagnard Education Fund. We hope this fund will provide college money for all of the children of our refugee women.

A lovely idea from one of our clients was to make a donation to an environmental organization in lieu of a favor. They used the back of each plantable placecard to include a message to guests about the donation.

Staccato is a home-based business, meaning we have not expanded our physical footprint to serve our customers. In our home office we utilize Energy Star rated appliances and equipment, eco-friendly detergents and cleaning supplies, and CFL light bulbs. We recycle 60% of our business and personal waste after re-purposing what we can. We re-use packaging and shipping materials when possible, and purchase only recycled new boxes and labels. While our products may be green, getting them to you contributes pollutants to our environment, so we offset our shipping-related carbon through the purchase of carbon credits.

What sets a PRB dress apart lies in the fabrics and the details. We take a unique approach to design by incorporating non-traditional, unique fabrics and textures into our designs. Silk cotton, silk wool, eyelet, and brocade are just a few examples of fabrics we use that you don’t normally find in a traditional wedding dress.

The devil is in the details, and we spend a lot of time making sure all of our dresses incorporate fresh, fashion-forward details… pockets, pleating, and layering, to name a few.

LoCoFlo: Desire for the Natural

We had so much fun last year meeting wonderful couples that are committed to buying local and making “green” choices for their weddings. Local Color Flowers (or LoCoFlo for short) is unique in that we specialize in the use of locally grown cut flowers for weddings and special events. We love what we do and our passion shines through in the work that we do and the personalized service we provide. We pride ourselves on creating unique, one of a kind bouquets and arrangements with locally grown, season flowers for your wedding or event.

Our most important green initiative is buying flowers locally. Buying locally grown flowers helps the environment in a variety of ways. Ten million cut flowers are sold everyday in the United States. 80% of those flowers come from Latin America. Buying flowers locally means that less fossil fuels, chemical preservatives and energy are used in the production and delivery of your flowers. Just like buying locally grown food or locally produced dairy products, buying flowers that are grown close to home reduces your carbon footprint on the earth.

We also compost all of or flower waste including trimmings, stems, leaves etc. We use recycled containers and vessels whenever possible.

Buying flowers locally is a great Green element to include in your wedding. In addition to bouquets and arrangements, there are lots of other ways to include locally grown flowers/plants into your wedding including: table arrangements for your rehearsal dinner, flowers for your hair and flowers, herbs or potted plants as favors.

Local Color Flowers was started to offer a environmentally and socially conscious alternative for clients purchasing flowers. We are committed to responsible use of resources, supporting the local economy and promoting neighboring farms. We seek to create and support a sustainable community; where people choose local products and services; where flower farms and farm families are thriving; where there is a diverse, strong local economy; and where people are connected to the living world around them.

Green Weddings are becoming more and more popular. The use of local and seasonal flowers is on the rise. We see couples choosing very naturalistic styled bouquets and centerpieces. Many of these styles include using non-flower natural elements such as branches, berries, fruits, vegetables, seed pods, herbs and foliage.

Style Tantrum: Masterpiece Expression

I love to create and make all my designs by hand from my own imagination. My style is romantic, flirty, vintage-inspired and often simple and less formal. I like to make wedding dresses from unlikely recycled bits and pieces. I sometimes start from a simple recycled dress with good lines and add draping, ruching, bits of lace and chiffon to arrive at a brand new dress. Sometimes I'll incorporate a vintage lace panel, like the one in my Lovebirds dress with lace birds, or a bit of beading or a handmade frill. One of my favorite things is to take a vintage dress, often a simple cotton day dress with a full skirt and create an entirely new dress with a whole new glamorous feel but a bit of the soft, dreamlike feel of the original. My creations are usually one of a kind, created from mostly recycled clothing, fabrics and textiles, and custom created with the bride who will wear it in mind.

I love the feel of simple fabrics like cotton and linen. I try to make gowns that feel lovely to wear and move and breathe in warm weather and breezes. I like ragged edges and that bit of unexpected whimsy that looks 'undone' and vulnerable. Many of my creations are created in tea stained or ecru hues as well as in white and cream and have unexpected touches of color in trim or sashes. I use a lot of sheer and chiffon type fabrics but aim for a natural look and feeling in the design. I try and design so that the girl that loves jeans and boots will feel just as at home in my designs as the fashionista.

My fabrics are gathered from thrifting, vintage houseware fabrics like curtains and embroidered linens, recycled dresses and wedding attire, and textile factory scraps - among other sources. I thoroughly clean the fabrics with an eye toward sensitivities before creating with them. When they are created, I endeavor to make them hand or machine washable, although this isn't possible with all of them. I also try to create things that can easily be reworn or overdyed to create a garment that can be used again. In the future, I hope to continue making one of a kind gowns but to incorporate new, eco-friendly, sustainable fabrics into my designs so I can get even more creative (and have longer trains ! :) )

I also make quite a few short or tea length styles for the bride who prefers to show off pretty ankles and shoes or who is getting married on a beach or in a field. I love brides with imaginative ideas who have fallen in love with a particular era or a piece of vintage print fabric and want something less 'wedding-ey' to wear. Since most of my work is created far from my customers, it has worked to create the dress to their size and allow a bit of time to have the dress altered locally for a last minute perfect fit. This is especially helpful with brides who gain just a tiny bit or lose a few more pounds than they expected in all the rush and need a little snugger size.

It also eliminates the need for local fittings. Some of my non-bridal customers had no problems sending their pieces back in the mail to have little added extra touches from me. I want to make them look beautiful and indulge a sentimental desire to add bits of family treasures or special colors and touches. This is the most special day and your dress should make you truly happy.

Cynthia's tips for going greener:

Recycling as a lifestyle is a great way to live 'green'. Giving things away to people who can reuse what you no longer need is wonderful too. Recycling is almost always cheaper and you may just learn to adore how you look in retro styles or to appreciate the fashion from another era.

I loved the bride who bought anthropologie shower curtains and made them into a lovely mermaid style gown. Do your own thing and make this day an expression of your uniqueness and the couple's loves and values.

Think of this day as your 'piece de resistance' or masterpiece expression of who you are as a bride and who the two of you are as a couple and how much you love and are loved by others around you. Then, make it special. Get extravagant with the details. Not with the money, but with the many small touches that make it a celebration of you. Think out of the box and do things no one has ever done - with your dress, your decorations and the cermony and reception. Be shamelessly yourself and have a bubblegum centerpiece if it has meaning to you both. Cut the cake in a wading pool or wear a red dress to your reception.

Imagination can take your celebration from dull to breathtaking. Let your wedding dress shine on you as an expression of your spirit, your true person. And make it unforgettable!

In the Up Do’s studio space, we are committed to a healthy, green workplace. We utilize lots of natural light and use eco-friendly lighting. Much of our furniture is repurpsosed. For clients, we incorporate natural, organic and eco-friendly lines of cosmetics and products such as Aveda, Burts Bee and Kaylala , the latter of which is made locally in Maryland. Some of the stylists even use bamboo make-up brushes and instead of disposable sponges and other tools, we sanitize brushes between clients to cut down on waste. Use hair products that are made with plant oils, herbs and flower extracts. Essential oils are fabulous too!

Conscious Elegance: Obsessively Green Design

When people ask why Conscious Elegance stands out from the dozens of artisan dressmakers out there, the answer is simple: They are completely and totally, green.

How green? Well, kind of obsessively green:

- Conscious Elegance (CE) uses nothing but reclaimed materials and sustainable fabrics, ethically-sourced in their dressmaking. (wait, nothing but...? What about the thread? Yes, they even use *certified organic thread*. They use it in everything they make, from the gowns to the neckties.)

- CE doesn't discard their extra fabric; the offcuts are put aside for ribbons and roses and free swatch samples. Eventually, when they can't find a use for all of the scraps (it happens when they get busy) they donate the pieces to local schools and workshops. The fabric is wonderful for kids because it's not full of chemicals. Plus, it's a great way to educate the public about eco-alternatives!

- CE re-uses all of their paper and packing supplies, even down to the tape that holds their parcels together. (Ever try to re-use packing tape? It's an adventure!)

- The company's owner and her secretary (i.e. husband) share one car between them and both walk to work. When they need to mail a package, they pay the postage for their parcels online and the mail carrier just collects them during normal rounds. Minimal gas usage!

- Yeah, the staff do bring re-usable bags for shopping and they compost and do all the usual minimal-impact-dances. They recycle or re-use everything they can. Does that matter to the dress-making? Well, yes. Because even plastic food trays can be re-purposed to hold ribbon and thread.

- CE's studio integrates recycled/reclaimed building materials: when repair work was needed last summer in their studio, CE replaced the carpet with springy deep-pile made from recycled soda bottles.

- CE won a green-business award for their efforts back in their early days, and now they are a vetted business in Green America. Because apparently there are other people out there who are just as obsessed.

But then there's the ethical side of things, which is just as (if not more) important:

- Conscious Elegance uses the highest plant content in their materials that they can find, including some vegan-friendly fabrics. Organic cotton – for the win!

- The silk in their hemp/silks is harvested from abandoned cocoons so that the silkworms are not harmed during production

- All of CE's creations are made in the USA for a Fair Living Wage. No sweatshops allowed.

- They practice Responsible Business by owning all of their equipment and stock outright; they are beholden to no one. They can take all the time needed to craft the perfect dress for their client. They have no business loans or debt to labor under. Does this mean that they stay small? Well, yes. They don't grow faster than is healthy for them. It's part of being *sustainable*.

But then there's the service they offer. Because what good is a business if it doesn't give good service?

All well and good. But why would anyone want a new dress when second-hand dresses are available?

Second-hand is great if you can find something that works. But some brides want something made just for them. And face it: Conscious Elegance dresses are a helluvalot prettier and healthier than many synthetic-fibered thrift-store offerings. By wearing a Conscious Elegance eco-chic wedding dress, clients are not only supporting sustainable and alternative fabrics and creating more demand for them, they are supporting a small, independent, woman-owned business who in turn also supports other small, independent businesses as her suppliers. It's an entire Community!

Let's be real: not all decisions are logical. Some brides want a gorgeous, drop-dead jaw-on-the-floor-makes-them-look-and-feel-like-a-princess dress on the day they've been dreaming about. A dress made for them and only them. And now they can have all that, with none of the guilt and less of the price tag.

Pure and simple: we are the kind of company we wish everyone would be.

OUR BEST GREEN TIP EVER: I actually did this for my own bridal shower: my sister (MOH) wanted to have a big shower for me with piles of gifts. But my H2B and I already each had apartments full of stuff; we didn't need another blender or gravyboat. I didn't want gifts nor did I want to send my friends off with silly plastic favors. My sister was aghast; Not open a pile of gifts? What activity would we do? And people expected little trinket favors!

So we had a Yankee Swap. What's a Yankee Swap? Everyone brings a gift-wrapped something from home that they don't use but that someone else could use. And all the packages go on a table. When the time comes for gifties, people draw numbers out of a hat. Number '1' chooses a wrapped gift from the table and opens it in front of everyone. The person who has number '2' can either take that gift or open another one. If number '1's gift is taken, then they can choose a new gift. Then number '3' can take one of the opened gifts, or choose a new one to open. And so on. It was a fabulous time and everyone, including me, went home with something new to them. And I didn't have a mound of gravy-boats to deal with.

Want some other easy green eco-tips for wedding planning? Ones you can actually use?

- Re-think those decorations! Use stuff that you can use again or that can be donated to a hospital or to the venue itself. For our wedding reception, we bought potted plants and candle holders at a craft store and decorated them with local flowers. And the ones that no one took home? We returned them to the craft store so someone else could enjoy them.

- Use washable plates and cutlery instead of plastic, including for the wedding cake. Even recycling plastic takes up resources. Washing metal and china is much kinder for the environment, and looks so much more elegant. For a funky and more interesting effect, don't bother trying to match settings.

- DIY brides: get your stuff at Goodwill or a thrift store. That's right: fun dinnerware and decorations and place-settings and all sorts of things can be found in thrift stores (even wedding dresses, if you're lucky). It's the best kind of recycling: no need to buy new stuff; it's often a lot less expensive if you buy it secondhand. When you're done with it, pass it along or just bring it back and donate it again. Consider it a very cheap rental. Better yet: borrow stuff if you can.

- Let your wedding party wear clothes of their own choosing. Choose a color-theme if you want to tie things together, but everyone will be much happier and more comfortable if they wear something they already own (or acquire for the occasion). Reserve veto rights if you prefer.

gillette portrait arts a studio of 4 women who have a blast working together and with their couples. They are one of 3 photo studios you will meet at the Mid-Atlantic Green Wedding Showcase. A little more about them....

We are from different backgrounds and ages but together we inspire each other creatively. Our clients are our first priority and we do all we can to not only make fabulous images for them - but a one-of-a-kind experience as well - from the signing of the contract to the delivery of final album.

A few fun things that make us special… We offer a self-shooting Photobooth where the couple and their guests have a ton of props at their disposal for a remote controlled booth. The photos are displayed in a gallery separate from their wedding images online. We also have an annual "Brides’ Night Out" party at our studio for past and future brides.

We've been in business for 8 years and just recently moved into a new riverfront studio space, which is a converted warehouse.

To keep it green, we do primarily online proofing and try to do as much teleconferencing as possible as opposed to constant travel on the road. Half of our album products are made from recycled materials and ALL of our promotional materials are made from recycled papers. We also use a photo lab which utilizes only recycled materials for all of their packing and shipping. We recycle basic day-to-day activity within the studio, too.

To keep your wedding green, do all of your proofing online - half of paper proofs you will glance at once and then put aside forever!

Whichgoose is a one-girl operation run by Maryland- native Emily Zych. She takes inspiration from nature and vintage romance to create whimsical crowns and unique bridal accessories.

Her main goal is to create a fantasy for brides -- to transform their childhood fairytale dreams into a stylish reality.

Emily uses mostly natural and vintage elements in the pieces she makes. The natural elements tend to be items that gatheedr from the ground or harvested from large growths. Vintage is the most exciting element to Emily. It's the best form of recycling in her opinion!

You're wearing something that someone else has already loved ... the idea is so romantic!

So many decorative items from nature can be incorporated at very little cost! Emily loves the idea of a "woodland" style wedding. Think of little branch and moss centerpieces. And depending on the season, there is so much that grows abundantly and naturally that can be used for flower decorations without the additional expense of a florist. Potted plants are also a great idea – centerpieces that guests can take with them and continue to enjoy.

Emily feels that so much of what we do nowadays is thrown away after one use -- but a wedding should be an event that lasts (not just in your memory).

There's nothing quite as incredible as watching a project go all the way from the very beginning to the very end. Like the 80's Dress. This wedding gown was $25 in an antique shop in Ellicott City, Md. It was probably all-that back in 1982 - with loads of beads and appliques, as well as a huge butt bow and several-yard-long train. While it's looks were decidedly dated, we looked at this dress and saw potential: yards and yards of fabric in great shape; beads and lace that were perfectly usable - and worth well more than $25.

Enter master dressmaker, Barbara Deckert. Barbara took this dress from 1982 and remade it into a work of art. Barbara Deckert started sewing over 40 years ago and has been sewing professionally for over 21 years. She is the author of two books, Sewing for Plus Sizes: Design, Fit and Construction for Ample Apparel and Sewing 911: Practical and Creative Rescues for

Sewing Emergencies. She has written for numerous national publications such as Sew News, Threads, Butterick Home Catalogue, BBW, and The Wedding Pages. She has been interviewed by dozens of national magazines and newspapers as an expert on sewing and custom clothing, such as Women’s Wear Daily and Real Simple. She has appeared as a guest on the television programs America Sews on PBS and Sew Much More on HGTV. She is a charter member of the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals (ASDP). Presently semi-retired, she accepts only a limited number of commissions per year.

Here are some of the facts of the job...

Recycled materials from the original dress include the poly shantung and poly underlining, beaded lace motifs, lace trim, pearl buttons, beads, pearls, sequins, and crinoline netting.

From the original dress, only a handful of postage stamp-size shantung pieces, a few unembellished lace motifs, and a small piece of net remain.

Several of the large beaded lace motifs from the original gown were “played forward” to embellish another bride’s custom gown. (Image immediately below of 2nd gown that utilized lace motifs from original 80s gown)

The front and back of the original dress were used intact; the train became the overskirt on the new dress. New materials include fifteen yards of Amity Peace Silk, corselette materials, and biodegradable silk in green and purple.

· Total labor: 77.25 hours.

· Deconstruction of original dress: 20 hours.

· Drafting: 4 hours.

· Hand sewing 28 roses: 11 hours.

· Ruching and beading contrast band by hand: 6 hours.

· Original dress cost about $25; Peace silk and China silk cost about $550; approximate cost of dress (labor plus materials) would be about $5,000.

And the final, stunning recycled gown...

A close-fitting sheath, mounted on boned corselette, of off-white, re-purposed, poly shantung with front and back V neckline, center back zipper embellished with pearl buttons and asymmetrical, off the shoulder decorative strap embellished with hand sewn roses made of shantung, gold Amity Peace Silk, beaded lace motifs, and moss green China silk leaves and tendrils; dropped, asymmetrical waist with contrast shaped band of closely hand ruched and beaded gold Amity Peace Silk embellished at side front with roses, leaves, and tendrils; gathered, circular shantung overskirt with asymmetrical front split, trimmed with triple ruffle of shantung, Peace Silk, and lace, revealing gold double layered Amity Peace Silk underskirt with ivory cotton Cluny lace edging at hem, and attached crinoline; detachable, nine foot long train in Austrian-style ruched gold double layered Peace Silk with Cluny lace edging; silk six foot long wrap in purple with narrow hems.

Ben chatted with Tracy from Creative Parties in Bethesda about her extensive line of eco-stationary. Her collection, called the Green Paper Studio offers brides & grooms 30% to 100% post consumer recycled papers for invites, thank-you's, menus and more. Even gift wrap is available as part of the line!

Event Origins provided everyone with some cool recycled cardboard furniture to relax on...

Riggs: Sophistication with Warmth

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is a not-for-profit, member-supported organization committed to saving the Chesapeake Bay.

Our vision is for the Bay and its tributary rivers to be broadly recognized as a national treasure, and to be highly productive and in good health as measured by water clarity, lack of toxic contaminants, and abundance of natural filters in the water and on the land. We have a significant challenge ahead of us.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s headquarters are located at the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, one of the world’s most energy-efficient buildings. It incorporates natural elements into a fully functional workplace, which has minimal impact on its Bay- and creek-front surroundings.

All materials are made of recycled products or created through processes that don't damage the environment. The Merrill Center is the first building to receive the U.S. Green Building Council's Platinum rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The facility fully incorporates green initiatives like recycling, water conservation, energy efficiency, and more.

The Philip Merrill Center is an excellent location for a smaller Bay-front wedding. Also, CBF has a new easy-to-use program that allows couples to create a customized page on the CBF website (including your own text and photos) to collect donations in lieu of wedding gifts.

Kate wrote the book - literally - on how to green your wedding. It's a great read and if you don't have it, you definitely need to pick up a copy at the show on Sunday!

The Green Bride Guide is the most credible and comprehensive website for couples seeking eco-friendly wedding ideas, products and services. One of the most basic ways to create a sustainable event is to use local, seasonal and organic elements whenever possible. When foods and flowers are in-season in your area, they don't need to be shipped hundreds or thousands of miles. This reduces their carbon footprint and cost. Even if your caterer is not organic, most will work with you to create a menu that incorporates as many local and seasonal items as possible. Additionally, every season offers its own unique combination of locally grown (organic) blooms, and you can discuss what is available in your area with your florist or local flower farm. Lastly, using the season for inspiration can provide natural elements for your decor, such as seashells, smooth stones, or beach glass you collect and make into name cards for a summer wedding.

At The Inn at Tabbs Creek, we have really tried to set ourselves apart from the rest of the pack as far as bed and breakfasts go in that we wanted to upgrade and preserve an old house on a beautiful piece of property, but also wanted to offer modern amenities. We are not your grandparents' B&B!

You will not be dining off of fine china and crystal, or tiptoeing around expensive antiques or colonial furniture. You will, however, be welcomed to enjoy the house and grounds, take the canoe or bikes out for a nature tour, have a glass of wine on the dock, or take a dip in the pool. Then in the evening, catch a nice meal at one of our unique local eateries, sleep in really comfortable beds with all natural latex toppers, on bamboo and organic cotton sheets, with your own private and modern bathroom.

In the morning, you will awaken to locally roasted organic coffee and a full, delicious breakfast featuring local and organic food whenever possible. You might then set out on a kayak adventure, take a paddle-boarding lesson, fish and crab off of our dock, or take a local sailing tour.

Then catch a gorgeous sunset, and, well, repeat...We love to get to know our guests and make sure everyone is having a relaxing and fun getaway. It is great when a spontaneous oyster roast, bocce game, cook-out or guitar playing session just happens among guests, and that is part of the magic of what we are trying to create at The Inn at Tabbs Creek.

We have remodeled the facility using as many green materials and practices as possible, reusing as many materials as possible, and using sustainable products for any new building or construction. As we are located right on the water, we only use organic fertilizer in our gardens, and eco friendly cleaners, laundry detergent, soaps, shampoos, etc. so as any runoff will not affect our beautiful creek off the Chesapeake Bay. We also installed a water system that uses reverse osmosis filtration without the use of chlorine or other harmful chemicals. We encourage our guests to reuse their towels and sheets to save on laundry and electricity (but will gladly provide fresh linens on request).

One of our greatest goals is to continue to support our local economy by providing as many local food products as possible, and working with the local restaurants and businesses to help provide our guests a wonderful small town experience in a community dedicated to preserving their natural surroundings by promoting eco-tourism.

This year, we are focusing more on eco-friendly package weekends that involve low impact activities such as cycling, kayaking, paddle-boarding, eco-caching, and bird watching.

With our county being surrounded by water, it is the perfect location for nature lovers. We also hope to complete our organic fruit and vegetable garden this year, which will enable guests to learn more about simple organic gardening practices while enjoying the produce right from our backyard.

We have just started to book our Inn as a venue for small weddings, (100 or less guests), but also see our place as the perfect spot for a romantic couples retreat. We have only been in full operation for a little less than a year, but have already had more couples come to celebrate their honeymoon, anniversary, or just to escape the hectic life in the City. Although we do rent out the entire Inn for Family Reunions, otherwise children under 14 are not permitted, which then allows for couples with children to feel as if they are really getting away for an "adult" vacation. We feel like this would be the perfect spot for a bachelor or bachelorette week end party as well, or future in-laws or families to get to know each other better in a relaxed atmosphere.

For the Bride & Groom…

Keep it relaxed and fun!
Buy potted houseplants, herbs, and perennials for decorating, then give away to guests as favors, or plant around your new home.
Use creative containers for wildflowers, candles, and centerpieces rather than buying new vases, etc.
Go paperless whenever possible: email invitations, set up a wedding website with directions, activities, information and registries.
When renting glassware, think of creative ways to label each glass with a ribbon that guests can write their name on, (easier to keep up with and not dirty more over the course of the reception).
When using disposable dishware, choose biodegradable products
Have plenty of recycling containers on site if providing beverages in cans or bottles
Feature local and seasonal food from local restaurants and/or caterers...give guests a taste of your "region" from the produce to the wine.
Brides, consider wearing your mother's dress! A good seamstress can update it as you like and arrange for a proper fitting.
When family and friends ask if they can help, let them! You will be amazed at how many talents might exist within your own circle of family and friends who are eager to pitch in.

Local Color Flowers is unique in that we specialize in the use of locally grown cut flowers for weddings and special events. When you work with us- at Local Color Flowers, aka "LoCoFlo" - you get to work with people who are truly excited about the work they do.

Because we use what is locally grown and in season, each arrangement, each bouquet is unique. We have no standard options or recipes. We can guarantee that your bouquet and arrangements will be one of a kind.

We also compost all of or flower waste including trimmings, stems, leaves etc. We use recycled containers and vessels whenever possible.

For the Bride & Groom…

Buying flowers locally is a great Green element to include in your wedding. In addition to bouquets and arrangements, there are lots of other ways to include locally grown flowers into your wedding including: table arrangements for your rehearsal dinner, flowers for your hair and flowers, herbs or potted plants as favors.

Buying locally and supporting local business is so important. Check out Local Harvest or the Department of Agriculture to find a farmers market near you!

Also, COMPOST! Everyone can/should compost. It's pretty easy, you reduce waste being thrown into landfills and you get a great soil amendment for your garden or potted plants.

Since we are not traditional florists, the trends that we see are a little different than the more mainstream floral trends. Green Weddings are becoming more and more popular. The use of local and seasonal flowers is on the rise. We see couples choosing very naturalistic styled bouquets and centerpieces. Many of these styles include using non-flower natural elements such as branches, berries, fruits, vegetables, seed pods, herbs and foliage.

The desire for a natural look doesn't end with the flowers. Clients are choosing natural and recycled "vessels" rather than traditional vases. This year we will be using recycled Patron Tequila bottles, Orangina bottles, wine bottles and milk jugs as well as grape vine nests, pumpkins, apples and compostable pots. In terms of flower trends, we are having more and more requests for green (colored) flowers such as green zinnias, mums and lisianthus.
